Hockworthy Fete June 2026 was held at Coopers Ridge in Staple Cross with thanks to the Maltby family and all the helpers to support this lovely afternoon. The sun was out, the BBQ was was on, cakes donated, raffle tickets sold, skittles being played and many more games for the children. An afternoon out listening to music and meeting friends all in support of raising funds for St Simon & St Jude's Church of Hockworthy.
About St Simon & St Judes Church
About us Hockworthy, which includes the hamlets of Staple Cross with its pub, and Waterslade, is an ancient, peaceful, rural parish, with the church and a historic village hall at its centre.
The ChurchRebuilt in Victorian times, the church structure is well maintained and in good order. The church door is always open, and there is considerable volunteer support, with a number of those who willingly help with flower arranging, grass-cutting and cleaning, not being regular church-goers.
Congregation and WorshipThere are 19 names on the electoral roll and the congregation varies depending on the type of service. Our regular services take place on the second and fourth Sundays of each month, one Holy Communion and the other Matins. The identifying feature of our worship is the prominent use of the Book of Common Prayer. Members of the congregation read a lesson and, on occasion, others prepare short Reflections in lieu of a sermon. We are most fortunate to have a resident organist whose input greatly enhances our worship. Festival services such as Harvest attract a larger congregation, with considerably more at the Christmas Carol Service - this is by far the best attended service of the year, with a packed church, and we encourage young people to take an active part with readings, musical performances etc.
The PCC The PCC currently has 5 members, and quarterly cluster meetings are hosted by Holcombe Rogus, followed by our individual PCC meeting. We are trying to find 2 Church Wardens, but the members are holding things together, including taking it in turns to take the lay-led Matins Service.Fundraising events are well supported: fetes, quizzes, coffee mornings, dog shows, and occasional music events, which mean our finances are stable. A local Artist has produced cards, from her painting of the Church and generously donated them to the PCC to sell.
